Life as a woman

This page consists of brief discussions on topics that women must consider everyday.

For some, talking so openly about issues with sexual harassment, spikings, and general discomfort might be unsettling. Unfortunately, women do not have the privilege of ignorance.

Women are always fearful of sexual harassment, abuse, or assault, whether this be in the workplace, on a date, with friends, or on a night out.

The issues need to be addressed and changed need to be made.

Girls Night In (Instagram)

Many Universities made Instagram accounts, such as @girlsnightinleeds

These accounts were made in solidarity with one another to help women with the fear of spikings.

These accounts have created things like podcasts, put on events, and allow their pages to be a safe space for girls.

Ask for Angela

Ask for Angela is a safety initiative created by Police in Lincolnshire, England in 2016. The term 'Ask for Angela' was intended to be used at bars, clubs, and pubs across the United Kingdom as a way of telling the staff you are vulnerable or unsafe. The staff will then make sure the person gets home safe and discreetly.

Posters are in bathrooms where the campaign is used, with questions from 'Angela' for people to reflect on their current position.

The name Angela is in remembrance of Angela Crompton, who was abused and killed by her husband in 2012 after an argument about re-decorating his house spiralled.

Spikings

In Autum to Winter of 2021, there was a sudden increase in spiking of drinks, as well as a change to the way this was previously done.

It was found that some men were using injections, to spike girls with drugs directly into their bodies. Many women were taken to hospital, with severe bruising and infections from men reusing the same needles.

Male Dominated Indsutries

Historically, men have dominated many industries, such as STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics)

Today, this has changed, and women are now taking over roles previously thought to be for men.

In the music industry, especially DJs, women make up less than half of acts at events and festivals. For female DJs, this makes breaking into the industry incredible difficult.

We interviewed Permission To Dance about issues with female DJs in the industry. Click here to read more.
