Abortion Rights

A discussion of the current issues with abortion rights in the United States.

On Monday the 2nd of May, it was revealed by Politico that the US Supreme Court was preparing to knock down Roe v. Wade, according to a draft written by Justice Samuel Alitco.

Roe v. Wade is the name a lawsuit that led the Supreme Court to give to consitutional right for abortion across the United States. The majority voted for abortion to be accessible during the first trimester of pregnancy.

Roe refers to Norma McCorvey, a woman who was 22, unmarried, unemployed, and pregnant for the third time in 1969. She went to have an abortion in the southern state of Texas.

Simultaneously, Henry Wade was the appointed district attorney of Dallas County, Texas. He enforced the state law that prohibited abortions unless it was to save the woman's life. McCorvey decided to sue Wade.

Ultimately the Supreme Court ruled in her favour, but McCorvey had already given birth by this stage, and instead placed the child up for adoption.
