According to numerous studies, around 10% of performers at music festivals around the globe are female, and 28% of artists on electronic music festival line-ups were women. Although this is slowly changing, and female musicians are becoming more prominent, it was also reported that only 30% of the 160 artists featured on the Billboard Hot 100-year-end chart in 2022 were women (from assists.uscannberg.org).

However, in recent years, female DJs have been massively taking over the music game. A massive name that appeared in 2022 was Eliza Rose, who wrote and per- formed B.O.T.A (Baddest of Them All). This song was made in collaboration with Eliza and Interplanetary Criminal and gained traction through DJ sets at Glastonbury Festival after being released through Eliza’s independent record label Rosebud Recordings on June 15th, 2022.

The song went completely viral on TikTok, with 951.4k videos made, ranging from DJ sets, get ready with me videos, vlogs, and more. The song was then officially released on a licencing deal through Warner Records, in August of 2022. This song completely took over and became the song of the summer last year, which is shown by topping the UK Singles Chart for two consecutive weeks. This was a huge milestone as the last female DJ to hold this spot was Sonique’s ‘It Feels So Good’, 22 years earlier. By December 2022, B.O.T.A was a certified platinum in both the United Kingdom and Australia. This year, Eliza released ‘Better Love’ produced by Mura Masa. Unlike B.O.T.A, Better Love takes inspiration from the garage music sub-genre of electronic music, giving it more of a light-hearted dance feel. Currently, the song has 2,047,193 streams on Spotify and has been used in over 500 TikTok videos! Eliza Rose truly is taking the DJ world by storm.

Girls Don’t Sync are a female only DJ collective who are also doing an incredible job at changing the game. The Liverpool based group comprises of Sophia Violet, Hannah Lynch, Matty Chiabi and Gaia Ahuja (who performs under the name G33). These four best friends are on a mission to create an ‘army’ of female DJs. Since forming in 2021, the group has grown to mas- sive rates, by playing at Glastonbury, Warehouse Project, and Bergenheim Club in Berlin, and even winning Best Breakthrough DJs and DJ Mag’s Best of British Awards at the end of 2022. The girls are all from diverse backgrounds, including Indian and Italian G33, Zambian Matty, Malaysian and Barbadian Hannah. Sophia is also a type one diabetic, and constantly has her device on show. This diversity allows young girls to feel empowerment in themselves and watch other versions of people like them have fun, which is so important! Simple representation like this can give girls such a confidence boost and even influence girls to try new ventures for work!

From watching boiler rooms and sets, you can see that this group is a massive powerhouse. They collaborate and mesh so well together as a collective, and this comes through in the mixes of genres played throughout their raves. The energy they share is truly insane, creating a fun, positive atmosphere for any audience, physical or through the screen!

This year, GDS are playing in festivals across the UK and the globe. From Parklife to Snow Bombing, these girls are sure to be on any festival line up you see in the near future, and they’ll be sure to have a party!

Jyoty Singh, who goes by the name Jyoty, is a huge and established name within the DJ inudstry. After starting out as a radio host for Rinse FM, then working on the door at Boiler Room, she soon took over the underground rave scene of London with her various genre mixes and fun-loving attitude. Her debut set video at Boiler Room features all of her incredible genre mixes, including hip-hop, afrobeat, funk, and garage with lots of 2000’s tunes integrated in! Jyoty recently blew up on TikTok from a video of her debut set at Boiler Room in 2019. We must say, it truly is a great set and definitely one of our favourites here at Ivory Halen! (I honestly listen to the full set once a week) This video racked up 2 million hits on the app and has led to her own account following doubling.

She’s very transparent online with fans and followers about everything ranging from her diabetes, showing sets, behind the scenes videos, and even sharing hauls and get ready with me videos. This type of presence online makes Jyoty appear so calm, warm, and kind, and really allows us as followers to gain a little bit more of an insight into what being a DJ or performer is really all about!

Jyoty also has an account, @jyotyisforreal on Instagram where she posts about upcoming dates for her "intimate, exclusive, multi-sensory experience that starts with a live podcast discussing everything you always wanted to know about your favourite artist, followed up by an acoustic performance with annotations... a la MTV Unplugged".

She also has @areyouhomegrown , which is her own club night for music lovers to come together and have a great time. "Homegrown is a space where we all come to see faces that over time will become familiar and to hear sounds that remind us of days long gone or days yet to come." She's decided to keep 2023's dates slightly more secretive "unless you know where to look" as quoted in the accounts bio, so do some digging if you'd like to attend!

The Glasgow-born Lauren Andrews, known on stage as either La La Selector or La La, is another up-and-coming female DJ. After going viral on TikTok from a Mixmag house and techno set in The Lab LDN, La La was on everyone’s for you page. The iconic video shows the entire audience dancing and having a great time, alongside La La! She’s been preforming in Sub Club and Edinburgh’s iconic FLY club over the past 6 years. Now, La La has a weekly slot on Rinse FM, and has performed at Ibiza’s Hï, Amnesia, and CircoLoco to name a few.

La La is truly a force to be reckoned with, and we can't wait to see more of her in her Radio 1 residency every Thursday 11pm-midnight!
